1982 World Amateur Snooker Championship
The 1982 World Amateur Snooker Championship was the tenth edition of the tournament also known as the IBSF World Snooker Championship. The 1982 tournament was played in Calgary, Canada from 6 to 19 September 1982. Terry Parsons defeated Jim Bear 11–8 in the final to win the title. Tournament summary The first World Amateur Snooker Championship was held in 1963, and, after the second event in 1966, had been played every two years since. The 1982 tournament was held at the Village Square Leisure Centre in Calgary from 6 to 19 September 1982. There were 36 competitors, who played in four Round-robin groups each of nine entrants from 6 to 14 September. The top two players from each group qualified for the quarter-finals. IBSF World Snooker Championship
The IBSF World Snooker Championship (also known as the World Amateur Snooker Championship) is the premier non-professional snooker tournament in the world. The event series is sanctioned by the International Billiards and Snooker Federation. A number of IBSF champions have gone on to successful careers in the Pro ranks, notably Jimmy White (1980), James Wattana (1988), Ken Doherty (1989), Stuart Bingham (1996), Marco Fu (1997), Stephen Maguire (2000) and Mark Allen (2004). Both Ken Doherty (in 1997) and Stuart Bingham (in 2015) have gone on to win the professional World Snooker Championship . Joe Grech
Joseph "Joe" Grech, (born 9 February 1934) is a Maltese singer, who was born in Cospicua, Malta. He is best known for introducing the Maltese language to the Eurovision Song Contest 1971, the first appearance from Malta on this pan-European television event. Early years At a very early stage in his life, Joe started to play the trumpet with the Zejtun Band Club. However, he soon switched to singing. He was the first singer to win the first Malta Song Festival in 1960, a festival which was organized by the Żgħażagħ Ħaddiema Nsara, the local section of the Young Christian Workers. The festival was held at the Radio City Opera House in Hamrun, Malta. Ten songs were presented in the semi-final of 3 November and another ten songs on the semi-final of 4 November. Paul Mifsud
Paul Mifsud is a Maltese former professional snooker player. Career Mifsud turned professional in 1983, and in the primitive world rankings at this time, was placed 49th. He was relegated from the snooker tour two seasons later, and has since competed as an amateur. Mifsud's most notable performance was in reaching the last 32 of the 1984 World Championship, where he lost 2–10 to Terry Griffiths. Paddy Browne
Paddy Browne (born 1 April 1965) is an Irish former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1965 in Dublin, in 1979 he won the Irish National U-16 Championship and was invited to appear on the BBC’s Junior Pot Black where Paddy he played with top English juniors such as John Parrott and Dean Reynolds. The next year he won the Irish National U-19 Championships. The next year, still only 17 years-old he won the Irish senior National Championships and followed it up with a victory over Belfast’s Sammy Pavis to win the All Ireland National trophy. Browne turned professional in 1983, having won the 1982 Republic of Ireland amateur championship. Malcolm Bradley
Malcolm Bradley (born 8 July 1948) is an English former professional snooker player. Career In 1982, Bradley reached the final of the English Amateur Championship, finishing as runner-up after being defeated 9–13 by Dave Chalmers. Bradley and Chalmers both represented England at the 1982 IBSF World Snooker Championship. Bradley qualified from his round-robin qualifying group with seven wins in eight matches, but lost 0–5 in the quarter-finals to the eventual champion Terry Parsons. Wayne Jones (snooker Player)
Wayne Jones (born 24 December 1959) is a former Welsh professional snooker player. He won the Welsh Amateur snooker championship in 1983 by defeating Terry Parsons in the final, and turned professional in 1984. Despite never breaking into the top 16, he reached the last 16 and quarter-finals of many ranking events. Seed (sports)
A seed is a competitor or team in a sport or other tournament who is given a preliminary ranking for the purposes of the draw. Players/teams are "planted" into the bracket in a manner that is typically intended so that the best do not meet until later in the competition, usually based on regular season. The term was first used in tennis, and is based on the idea of laying out a tournament ladder by arranging slips of paper with the names of players on them the way seeds or seedlings are arranged in a garden: smaller plants up front, larger ones behind. Billiards And Snooker Control Council
The Billiards and Snooker Control Council (B&SCC) (formerly called the Billiards Association and Control Council (BA&CC)) was the governing body of the games of English billiards and snooker and organised professional and amateur championships in both sports. It was formed in 1919 by the union of the Billiards Association (founded in 1885) and the Billiards Control Club (founded in 1908). The B&SCC lost control of both the amateur and professional games in the early 1970s, following a dispute with professional players over challenge matches for the World Billiards Championship, and dissatisfaction from snooker associations outside the UK about the balance of voting power in the organisation, with a large proportion of votes being held in a small number of English areas.
