1967 Bahamian General Election
General elections were held in the Bahamas on 10 January 1967. The result was a tie between the Progressive Liberal Party and the United Bahamian Party, both of which won 18 seats. In a reversal of the previous election (in which the PLP received the most votes but the UBP won the most seats), this time the PLP received a lower share of the vote than the UBP, but was able to form the country's first black-led government with the support of the sole Labour Party (Bahamas), Labour Party MP Randol Fawkes. The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an archipelagic and island country within the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean. It contains 97 per cent of the archipelago's land area and 88 per cent of its population. Carlton Francis
Carlton Francis was a Bahamian politician and former cabinet minister. Francis was born on 14 November 1919 in Miami. He was educated in St Andrew's University in Scotland, and in the University of the West Indies. He worked as head teacher and principal. He also served as the president of the Bahamas Teachers' Union. In 1965 Francis became the deputy chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party. In 1967 he was elected to House of Assembly and was made Minister of Finance, and he held that office until 1973. Clifford Darling
Sir Clifford Darling (6 February 1922 – 27 December 2011) was the fifth governor-general of the Bahamas from 2 January 1992 until his retirement on 2 January 1995. Early life and education Clifford Darling was born on 6 February 1922, on Acklins Island to Charles and Aremilia Darling, He attended Acklins Public School and schools in New Providence. Darling trained as an electrician and a barber. He migrated to Nassau before going on the Contract. Trade unionist Darling returned to Nassau, got a job as a taxicab driver, and became an influential labor leader, serving as general secretary and president of the Bahamas Taxicab Union. In the 1950s, Darling led successful negotiations for improved conditions for taxi drivers, culminating in the pivotal 1958 general strike. Sir Arthur Alexander Foulkes, ON, GCMG (born 11 May 1928) is a politician who was the ninth governor-general of the Bahamas from 2010 to 2014. Foulkes was elected to the House of Assembly in 1967 and served in the government of Lynden Pindling as Minister of Communications and Minister of Tourism. In 1971, he was co-founder of the Free National Movement, and he was appointed to the Senate in 1972 and 1977 before returning to the House of Assembly in 1982. Sir Cecil Vincent Wallace Whitfield (20 March 1930 – 9 May 1990) was a Bahamian politician who was a founding member and the first leader of the Free National Movement political party. He also served as a Minister in the cabinet of Lynden Pindling from 1967 to 1970 and as a longtime member of the Bahamian Parliament. Milo Butler
Sir Milo Boughton Butler (11 August 190622 January 1979) was a Bahamian politician who served as the second governor-general of the Bahamas from 1973 to 1979. He died in office, aged 72. Early life and family Butler was born in Nassau, The Bahamas on 11 August 1905 to George Raleigh Butler and his wife Frances. He attended the George Washington School in Florida, the public school at Rum Cay, and the Boys' Central School in Nassau. At age 17, Butler began his own grocery business. On 14 October 1928, Butler married Caroline Loretta Watson. They had seven sons and three daughters.
