159th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 159th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army. It served as a part of the 40th Infantry Division for most of its history before deploying in World War II as a part of the 7th Infantry Division. History The regiment traced its lineage to the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the California National Guard, organized on 12 December 1879 from existing companies. Interwar period The 159th Infantry arrived at the port of New York on 5 April 1919 on the troopship USS Edgar F. Luckenbach and was demobilized on 1 May 1919 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. Per the National Defense Act of 1920, the 159th Infantry was reconstituted in the National Guard in 1921, assigned to the 40th Division, and allotted to the state of California. III Corps is a corps of the United States Army headquartered at Fort Cavazos, Texas. It is a major formation (military), formation of the United States Army Forces Command. Fort Ord is a former United States Army post on Monterey Bay on the Pacific Ocean coast in California, which closed in 1994 due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action.
