The 12.7×81mmSR Cartridge (firearms), cartridge was created by Vickers as an export variant of the cartridge developed for the Vickers .50 machine gun. The major changes were to modify the case from rimless to Semi-Rimmed and reduce the bullet weight from to . History Vickers sold a number of weapons chambered in the cartridge to Italy and Japan, who developed their own weapons that utilized that cartridge. The cartridge was adopted by Italy in 1933 with the Breda-SAFAT and Scotti–Isotta Fraschini Modello 1933 machine guns, which armed most of the aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica from the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, Ethiopian War to the Second World War. The cartridge remained in production until the 1970s, when the last Breda-SAFAT machine guns, that were in service until the 1970s as reserve weapons of the Italian Air Force, were decommissioned. Ho-103 Machine Gun
The Type 1 machine gun ( signifying its year of adoption, 1941) was a Japanese aircraft-mounted heavy machine gun widely used during World War II. It was also known as the Ho-103 in general use. The weapon itself was largely based on the American .50-caliber (12.7 mm) M2 Browning heavy machine gun, while the design of its ammunition was initially based on various Italian Breda-SAFAT 12.7 mm rounds. Japanese-designed and produced rounds eventually largely replaced these imported rounds. The Ho-103 achieved a slightly higher rate of fire (RoF) than the contemporary aircraft-mounted M2 Browning machine gun (AN/M2) by using the smaller, lower velocity semi-rimmed Breda-SAFAT 12.7 mm cartridge. The round was intermediate in length (88 mm) between the WWII German 13 mm calibre MG 131's ‘short’ 64 mm cartridge, and the ‘long’ 99 mm cartridge of the M2 Browning. Breda-SAFAT Machine Gun
Breda-SAFAT (''Società Italiana Ernesto Breda per Costruzioni Meccaniche / Breda Meccanica Bresciana'' - ''Società Anonima Fabbrica Armi Torino'') was an Italian weapons manufacturer of the 1930s and 1940s that designed and produced a range of machine-guns and cannon primarily for use in aircraft. Based on the M1919 Browning machine gun, the Italian guns were chambered to fire indigenous ammunition with and calibres, predominantly ball, tracer for the 7.7mm, including high explosive incendiary tracer (HEI-T) (filled with 0.8 grams of PETN), or armour-piercing (AP) for the 12.7mm. Ferenc Gebauer (25 June 1888 – 1958) was an Austrian-born Hungarian firearms designer and pilot during the First World War. Early life and career Gebauer was born as Franz Gebauer on 25 June 1888 in Velké Heraltice , (Groß Herrlitz in German) in Austria-Hungary to Wawra Józefa. From 1901 to 1911 he worked as a plant manager for a car factory in Germany, then went to work for the Puch motorcycle factory in Graz, Austria from 1911 to 1914. He served in World War I in the Austro-Hungarian Air Force (KuK Luftfahrtruppen) as a car courier officer of the army headquarters (August 21, 1914 to March 1915), a field pilot on the Italian front from May 25, 1916 to September 3, 1917, a factory pilot at the Aspern Phönix Flugzeugwerke aircraft factory from September 3, 1917 to September 1918 and finally served as a gunsmith at the Fischamend Air Base in 1918 until the war ended. Vickers was a British engineering company that existed from 1828 until 1999. It was formed in Sheffield as a steel foundry by Edward Vickers and his father-in-law, and soon became famous for casting church bells. The company went public in 1867, acquired more businesses, and began branching out into military hardware and shipbuilding. In 1911, the company expanded into aircraft manufacture and opened a flying school. They expanded even further into electrical and railway manufacturing, and in 1928 acquired an interest in the Supermarine.
