The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is a Chinese state research institute and think tank. It is a ministry-level institution under the State Council of the People's Republic of China. The CASS is the highest academic institution and comprehensive research center for philosophy and social sciences research in China. The CASS was founded in May 1977. Its predecessor was the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The main research objects of the Academy of Social Sciences are the language, philosophy, law, economy, religion, ethnicity, archaeology, history and literature of China and other countries in the world. The Institute of Taiwan Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is an institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the 15th Bureau of the Ministry of State Security that conducts research on Taiwan's politics, economy, society, culture, foreign relations and cross-strait relations. The Commercial Press () is the first modern publishing organization in China. The Commercial Press is known for its academic publishing and translation work in humanities and social sciences, as well as the '' Xinhua Dictionary''. History In 1897, 26-year-old Xia Ruifang and three of his friends (including the Bao brothers Bao Xian'en and Bao Xianchang) founded The Commercial Press in Shanghai. The ''Xinhua Zidian'' (), also as ''Xinhua Dictionary'', is a Chinese-language dictionary published by the Commercial Press. The first edition of ''Xinhua Zidian'' was published in 1957. The latest version is the 12th edition, which was published in August 2020. It is the best-selling Chinese dictionary and the world's most popular reference work. In 2016, Guinness World Records officially confirmed that the dictionary, published by The Commercial Press, is the "Most popular dictionary" and the "Best-selling book (regularly updated)".
