PEO, the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (, ), is an umbrella organization for trade unions in Cyprus, which evolved from PSE (). It was instrumental in the 1948 strikes in the mines of the Cyprus Mines Corporation and has been closely related to AKEL. History When AKEL was declared illegal by the British colonial government of Cyprus in 1955, PEO and especially its leader Andreas Ziartides was the only legal leftwing political entity and it was expressing the politics of underground AKEL. PEO had a membership from all ethnic groups in Cyprus. In 1958 the Turkish Cypriot nationalistic organisation TMT launched a terror campaign against Turkish Cypriot members of PEO, killing the journalist Fazıl Önder and attempting to kill the head of PEO's Turkish bureau, Ahmet Sadi. Andreas Ziartides
Andreas Ziartides (; 1919–1997) was a Cypriot trade unionist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament from 1960 to 1991, being elected as a candidate of the left wing AKEL party. He was Secretary General of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) from 1943 to 1986. His contribution to the development of labour relations and labour legislation in Cyprus has been crucial and many consider him the person with the most significant role in shaping the trade union movement on the island. Pambis Kyritsis
Pambis Kyritsis (born 17 June 1958; ) is a Cypriot trade union leader and former politician. Born in Larnaca, Kyritsis studied at the University of Macedonia, where he was active in the student movement, and also co-ordinated supporters of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) in Greece. From 1990 to 1992, he was the general secretary of the United Democratic Youth Organisation. He then joined the executive council of AKEL, heading its local government section. In 1995, he became executive secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO), and then in 1999 its general secretary. At the 2006 Cypriot legislative election, Kyritsis was elected in Larnaca for AKEL. There, he chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Labour and Social Insurance. Greek Cypriots (, ) are the ethnic Greeks, Greek population of Cyprus, forming the island's largest Ethnolinguistic group, ethnolinguistic community. Fazıl Önder
Fazıl Önder (1926 – 1958) was a Turkish Cypriot journalist who was assassinated. Biography Fazıl Önder was born in Omorphita in 1926. He completed primary school, but was unable to attend secondary school for financial reasons. Thereafter, along with his brother Cemal, he embarked on an apprenticeship in a saddle shop. After the completion of his apprenticeship, he founded a saddle shop of his own with a business partner. From 1949 onwards, he signed up for membership to various trade unions, including the Pancyprian Federation of Labour. In 1951, he started working at the ''Turkish Literature Club (Turk Edebiyat Kulup)''. Turkish Cypriots or Cypriot Turks ( or ; ) are so called ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Turkish Cypriots are mainly Sunni Muslims. The Turkish Resistance Organisation (, TMT) was a Turkish Cypriot pro- taksim paramilitary resistance organisation formed by Rauf Denktaş and TAF officer Rıza Vuruşkan in 1958 as an guerilla organisation to counter the Greek Cypriot fighters organization EOKA A. Cyprus Mines Corporation
The Cyprus Mines Corporation was an early twentieth century American mining company based in Cyprus. In 1914, Charles G. Gunther began prospecting in the Skouriotissa area after reading in ancient books that the island was rich in copper and noticing promising ancient Roman mining, Roman slag heaps in the area. The company was established in 1916 by Colonel Seeley W. Mudd, his son, Harvey Seeley Mudd, and mining engineer/business partner, Philip Wiseman, whose family, along with the Mudds, were the primary owners of Cyprus Mines until the early 1970s when it was sold to Amoco.
