İzmit () is a municipality and the capital district of Kocaeli Province, Turkey. Its area is 480 km2, and its population is 376,056 (2022). The capital of Kocaeli Province, it is located at the Gulf of İzmit in the Sea of Marmara, about east of Istanbul, on the northwestern part of Anatolia. Kocaeli Province (including rural areas) had a population of 2,079,072 inhabitants in 2022, of whom approximately 1.2 million lived in the largely urban İzmit City metro area made up of Kartepe, BaÅŸiskele, Körfez, Gölcük, Derince and Sapanca (in Sakarya Province). Unlike other provinces in Turkey, apart from Istanbul, the whole province is included within the municipality of the metropolitan center. ''Astacus'' (from the Ancient Greek, Greek , ', meaning "lobster" or "crayfish") is a genus of crayfish found in Europe, comprising three Extant taxon, extant (living) species and three somewhat contested extinct species. These crayfish are found across Europe and live exclusively in freshwater, mostly inhabiting the bottom of lakes, ponds, and streams. Due to the crayfish plague, crayfish of this genus have declined in many European regions, being replaced by the invasive species, invasive North American signal crayfish, which carries the plague but is unaffected by it. Derince
Derince is a seaport, municipality and Districts of Turkey, district of Kocaeli Province, Turkey. Its area is 198 km2, and its population is 146,374 (2022). The mayor is Zeki Aygün (Justice and Development Party (Turkey), AK Parti). Derince Port is one of the few ports in Turkey under government control. The port is operated by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). Having one of the biggest storage area in the region, the port is widely used for finished vehicle product transportation. Derince is one of the few ports with railway connection in that area, and has the longest rail network within the port. Two rail ferry services use Derince Port, TekirdaÄŸ-Derince operated by TCDD and Derince-Chornomorsk/Poti operated by Bati Wagon.
