Épinal (; ; ) is a Communes of France, commune in northeastern France and the prefecture of the Vosges (department), Vosges Departments of France, department. Geography The commune has a land area of . It is situated on the river Moselle, south of Nancy, France, Nancy. Épinal station has rail connections to Paris, Remiremont, Strasbourg, Belfort and Nancy. History The mythical founding date of Épinal is said to be 983 since celebrations took place for the "Millennium" in June 1983. This date was chosen for political reasons to mark a "starting point" following the election of Philippe Séguin as mayor in March 1983. In 1444, the town of Épinal was still part of the domain of the Prince-Bishopric of Metz, bishops of Metz. In September, representatives of the town took advantage of King Charles VII of France, Charles VII's passage through Nancy to offer him the submission of the town and to ask for his protection in return. Vosges () is a department in the Grand Est region, Northeastern France. It covers part of the Vosges mountain range, after which it is named. The Basilica of Saint Maurice of Épinal is a Catholic basilica located in the French commune of Épinal. It is a religious building constructed, in its current state, between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is part of the Diocese of Saint-Dié. History In the Middle Ages, the lands were under the jurisdiction of the Lord of Metz; ecclesiastically, they were under the Diocese of Toul, part of the parish of Dogneville. The basilica is believed to stand on the site of the city's first church, built in the 10th century by Bishop Gerard of Toul at the request of Thierry de Hamelant, Bishop of Metz. The parish was formed from five manses taken from the parish of Dogneville: Spinal, Grennevo, Avrinsart, Villers, and Rualménil. Thierry de Hamelant, in founding the monastery, dedicated the church to Saint Maurice, serving both the city's population and the Benedictine monks. The Communauté d'agglomération d'Épinal is an administrative association of communes in the Vosges department of eastern France. It was created on 1 January 2013 by the merger of the former Communauté d'agglomération d'Épinal-Golbey, Communauté de communes CAPAVENIR, Communauté de communes du Pays d'Olima et du Val d'Avière, Communauté de communes Est-Épinal Développement and 11 other communes.
