''-zilla'' is an English slang suffix, a libfix back-formation derived from the English name of the Japanese movie monster Godzilla. It is popular for the names of software and websites. It is also found often in popular culture to imply some form of excess, denoting the monster-like qualities of Godzilla. This trend has been observed since the popularization of the Mozilla Project, which itself included the Internet Relay Chat client ChatZilla. The use of the suffix was contested by Toho, owners of the trademark Godzilla, in a lawsuit against the website Davezilla and also against Sears for their mark Bagzilla. Toho has since trademarked the word "Zilla" and retroactively used it as an official name for the "Godzilla In Name Only" creature from the 1998 Roland Emmerich film. Libfix
In linguistics, a libfix is a productive bound morpheme affix created by rebracketing and back-formation, often a generalization of a component of a blended or portmanteau word. For example, ''walkathon'' was coined in 1932 as a blend of ''walk'' and ''marathon'', and soon thereafter the ''-athon'' part was reinterpreted as a libfix morpheme meaning "event or activity lasting a long time or involving a great deal of something". Words formed with this suffix include ''talkathon'', ''telethon'', ''hackathon'', and so on. Affixes whose morpheme boundaries are etymologically based, and which are used in their original sense, are not libfixes. It began as a link portal to items of interest to Linabury, humor and hacking links. In 1996, Linabury began adding his cartoons. When the first blogging platforms emerged, Davezilla switched to a daily site, focusing mainly on humor at the suggestion of blogger Jeffrey Zeldman. Since then, it has become a popular destination for bloggers. , formerly known as Godzilla, is a kaiju, film monster originating from the 1998 film ''Godzilla (1998 film), Godzilla'', released by TriStar Pictures. It was initially created as a reimagining of Toho's Godzilla but was later re-branded as a separate character. Patrick Tatopoulos designed it after iguanas with a slim theropod appearance rather than the thick, bipedal designs of Toho's Godzilla. Go!Zilla is a proprietary download manager originally developed by Aaron Ostler in 1995, and later purchased by Radiate in 1999, for use on Windows. It is shareware and its previous ad supported version drew controversy among users and privacy advocates. Upon being acquired by Headlight Software in 2008, the ad-supported versions were discontinued and the software now offers a free limited trial. Go!Zilla was one of many download managers, also called download accelerators. These particular programs were especially useful when dial-up internet access was more common as it was more difficult to download data due to slow speeds and disconnections.
