Jatiya Sangsad

The Jatiya Sangsad, constitutionally the House of the Nation and commonly the Sangsad, is the unicameral legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called members of Parliament, or MPs. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. The most recent parliamentary election was held on 12 February 2026, in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a landslide victory. The 11 Party Alliance, led by the Jamaat-e-Islami won the second most seats and formed the main opposition.

The leader of the party, or coalition of parties, holding a majority of seats in Parliament becomes the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and thus serves as the head of the government. The President of Bangladesh, the ceremonial head of state, is chosen by Parliament. On 6 August 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th Jatiya Sangsad after the ousting of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ordered to form an interim government.

Following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24, 2026 due to his health complications, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of Acting President of Bangladesh in accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution. Consequently, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal took over parliamentary leadership as the Acting Speaker, managing daily legislative duties and coordinating with the Election Commission for the upcoming presidential elections.
