The Bundela (IAST:Bundel) is a Rajput clan that originated in the present-day Bundelkhand region of Central India. Legends and Folklores claim that the Bundelas established their independence in 13th century. However, they emerged in 1501 AD during the reign of their first historical ruler Rudra Pratap Singh, who founded the Bundela dynasty, which ruled Orchha state. The Bundelas of Orchha established several principalities, including Datia and Panna State. Under the Mughal Empire, the remaining part of the Chandel country called Jejakabhukti, became officially known as Bundelkhand, meaning the land of the Bundela Rajputs.
