Prince Yeongseon attempted to overthrow, and expel his uncle Emperor Gojong from the throne, but failed to do so. He was imprisoned for this incidient. This led to his later collaboration with the Japanese.
On 27 November 1907, Yi was appointed as Major General of Imperial Korean Army.
