In January 1986, the FCC added 98.1 MHz to the table of allotments for Salisbury, Connecticut. Johnson Development Corporation, then owner of
WKZE (1020 AM) applied for and was granted a
construction permit

in March 1988. The allotment was assigned the WKZE-FM call letters by the
Federal Communications Commission
