VMNs enable participating firms to specialize in core competencies while outsourcing non-core tasks, thus reducing expenses. The progression from VMNs has led to the emergence of Dynamic Manufacturing Networks (DMNs), which offer rapid reconfiguration in response to market or supply chain changes.
