Early coaching

Holland began his coaching career in 1989 as an assistant coach at Northern Colorado. He assisted Joe Glenn for four seasons and helped the Bears to two NCAA Division II playoff appearances. From 1993 to 1995; he coached the Frankfurt Knights in the Football League of Europe. In 1999, Holland moved to

. The football program was placed on NCAA probation as a result of recruiting violations during the tenure of previous head coach Chuck Langston. During his first season as the head coach of the Bronchos, UCO went 7–4, and won the

north division championship. After a 4–7 campaign in 2009, and 2-9 records in 2010, and 2011, UCO dismissed Holland as head coach. He returned to private business.
