Biography

According to

Johan van Gool Johan, or Jan van Gool (1685–1763), was a Dutch painter and writer from The Hague, now remembered mainly as a biographer of artists from the Dutch Golden Age. Life Jan van Gool was a pupil of Simon van der Does and Mattheus Terwesten.

he was taught to paint from his father, and though he was born in Bordeaux, he was trained mostly in the Hague and came to be known as the "French Netscher" not because of his place of birth, but because of his later work in Paris, where he lived from 1680-1699.Koedyk mentioned, Part 1, page 56
