High school career

Young began playing varsity basketball in the eighth grade, and while attending Mitchell High School, he rose to the top of the high school player ranks. His athletic honors included being named to the all-state team three times, being named the TSSAA Class AA "Mr. Basketball" in 2005, being named the 2006 Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and being named to the McDonald's High School All-American Team. Partly, the power forward was even a starter for the Bulls. He was the winner of the NBA Hustle Award that season.

Personal life

Young and his wife, Shekinah Beckett, have two sons named Thaddeus Jr. and Taylor. In May 2011, Young started a foundation called ''Young for Youth'' to help at-risk youth and young families. Young's mother, Lula Hall, died on November 13, 2014, after an 18-month battle with breast cancer; she was 57 years old.Wolves wear pink shoelaces in honor of Thad Young's late mom
