The newspaper, during her four years there, won a number of national and state awards. Schultz is the mother of two sons, Bryant and Zachary. She was married to ''Sun-Times'' columnist

from 1984 until their divorce in 2013. Schultz later remarried but remained close with Smith until his death in 2020.
