Rudolf Schenker already composed parts of the melody around 1976, but the lead guitarist at the time,

, rejected the song as too commercial. It was not until 1983 that the composition was completed and singer Klaus Meine added the lyrics. In an interview with Songfacts, Schenker explained: "It's a story about a love affair, where they recognized it may be over - but let's try again".
