The Genie Awards were given out annually by the

to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the
Canadian Film Award The Canadian Film Awards were the leading Canadian cinema awards from 1949 until 1978. These honours were conducted annually, except in 1974 when a number of Quebec directors withdrew their participation and prompted a cancellation. In the 1970s ...
s (1949–1978), known as the "Etrog Awards" for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed its statuette. Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which were distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, met to watch the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then voted on these nominations. In 2012, the Academy announced that the Genies would merge with its sister presentation for television, the
Gemini Awards The Gemini Awards were awards given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television between 1986–2011 to recognize the achievements of Canada's English-language television industry. The Gemini Awards are analogous to the Emmy Awards given in th ...
, to form a new award presentation, the Canadian Screen Awards.
