Names

The original Paiwan name for the area was Tjakuvukuvulj (Tjakuvukuvuɬ; historically rendered as ''Chaobo Obol'' or in ). Han Chinese settlers noted a rock outcropping in the shape of a lion's head () and called the village ''Sai-a-thau-sia'' (). Under
