In Japan, ''Game Machine'' listed ''Savage Bees'' on their March 15, 1985 issue as being the fifteenth most-popular arcade game at the time. Fan reception for the Famicom version was mixed: readers of '' Famimaga'' voted to give ''Exed Exes'' a 15.27 out of 30 score. A reviewer of '' Gamest Mook'' noted that the insect and skull-themed enemies, the inorganic backgrounds, as well as the mysterious and anxiety-inducing music posed a unique and exciting atmosphere. He also praised the mechanic of turning enemies into collectable fruit items as "the greatest attraction" for this title.
