Wagner announced his retirement on 2 August 2020. Overall he scored more than 60 goals in the two top divisions of German pro football.

Wagner was known for aerial power and strength, and was distinguished as a hard-working player. He was also physically imposing and direct, and praised as a striker who could "wreak havoc" in defences.
