S. M. Muhammed Sheriff

S. M. Muhammed Sheriff (1924-1981), affectionately known as 'Madurai Sheriff Sahib', was a distinguished Indian politician, professor and lawyer. He emerged as a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics, leaving an indelible mark on India's parliamentary history.
Sheriff Sahib was mentored by Quaid-e-Millath Muhammad Ismail Sahib and rose to prominence as the first elected Indian Union Muslim League Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu after India's independence. Early life and education

S. M. Muhammed Sheriff was born on 15 July 1924, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, his father was Muhammad Mather Rowther, his family was wealthy Rowther merchant family. He pursued his education at the American College, Madurai and later obtained degrees from the Madras University. S.M.Muhammed Sheriff married Shrimati M. A. Jowaharunnisa, daughter of eminent District Majistrate Justice Amsath Ibrahim of Madurai and was blessed with three daughters, Fathima Zohara, Haseena and Mariam.

Political career

S.M.Muhammed Sheriff's political journey began with his leadership roles in the Madurai City Muslim League and later as the secretary of the Madurai District Muslim League. He served as a municipal councillor in Madurai and was actively involved in various consultative committees, contributing significantly to issues concerning railways, foreign trade and health.

He was elected as a Member of the Fourth Lok Sabha (1967-70)from Ramanathapuram and later from Periyakulam in the Fifth Lok Sabha (1971-77). S.M.Muhammed Sheriff's parliamentary tenure was marked by his proactive engagement in legislative matters and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his constituents.
