Two species of ''Pteronarctos'' are known, ''P. goedertae'' and ''P. piersoni''. Although originally described as a member of
Enaliarctidae, cladistic analyses place ''Pteronarctos'' as sister to pinnipeds, in the clade
Pinnipediformes.
