Nance transferred to North Carolina to play in his fifth collegiate season, joining a team that had been national runners-up the season prior. He was able to join the Tar Heels due to an NCAA rule granting all student-athletes an extra year of eligibility because of the

shutting down sports at the end of the 2019–20 season. Immediately becoming a starter and a key part of the rotation, Nance and the Tar Heels struggled through an up-and-down season. Hampered by a nagging back injury that kept him out of a few games, Nance started all 30 games in which he played as a Tar Heel. He averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game, and shot 42% from the floor in his lone season in Chapel Hill.
