Etymology

The specific epithet ''carolynae'' was chosen to honor the arachnologist Carolyn L. Mullinex.

were previously referred to as ''Paraphrynus mexicanus'', but de Armas (2012) assigned the name ''Paraphrynus carolynae'' based on morphological differences.
