''Nothrotherium'' is derived from the Greek ''nothros'' ½Ï‰Î¸Ïός meaning "lazy" or "slothful," and ''therion'' ¸Î·Ïίον "beast", and the species ''N. maquinense'' is named after the Maquiné Grotto in
