History

The station was opened as on 20 September 1956. With the privatization of
Japanese National Railways The , abbreviated JNR or , was the business entity that operated Japan's national railway network from 1949 to 1987. Network Railways As of June 1, 1949, the date of establishment of JNR, it operated of narrow gauge () railways in all 46 pre ...
(JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Hokkaido. In 2018 the city of requested that the station be relocated at the city's expense 1.5 kilometers towards Wakkanai as most of the passengers were students of Nayoro High School. This was implemented on 12 March 2022 and the station renamed on that date.
