History

The village dates from the 12th century when the de Monteny family became the new owners of the manor. This family came from

in Normandy, and Mountnessing has been interpreted as "Mountney's Ging", ging being a term for meadow. Thoby Priory was first recorded as "Ginges", was located in Mountnessing.
