Background
At the start of
World War II, Swedish destroyer design had culminated in the , a powerful but expensive design. To meet the needs of the rapidly expanding navy, Sweden looked to foreign designs and procured four ships from Italy, two each of the and es. Italy also provided the blueprints for a more modern version of ''Psilander'', which was used by the designers at

Design and development
Design
The destroyers have been described as, "more an expression of standardization, simplicity and simple building methods than carefully planned men of war." They were small, only long, shorter than the British of escort destroyers then being produced in large numbers for the
Royal Navy and its allies.
