In 2011, Mitsubishi launched the Type-J gas turbines. These turbines were Mitsubishi's first combined-cycle gas turbines in the 1700°C-class, and also the first to surpass 60% operational efficiency. A key factor was the use of single-crystal turbine blades (MGA1700 alloy), which are considerably stronger than multi-crystal blades due to the lack of grain boundaries. In addition, the thermal barrier coating (TBC) of the blades have been improved, with the new thermally-sprayed ceramic coating offering higher porosity and thus lower thermal conductivity than sintered materials. These upgrades allow for an inlet temperature of 1600 Celsius.
