He lost to Akira Masuda (Japan) in 1983 and he lost to Ademir da Costa (Brazil) in 1987; finishing both times among the first 16 competitors. Out of his last 25 fights, Wedel lost one, was disqualified in one, won one by decision and won 22 by knock-out. Wedel became the coach of the Dutch National Karate team (1988-1991).
