Matt Martians

Matthew Robert Martin (born September 12, 1988), known professionally as Matt Martians, is an American record producer, illustrator, singer and songwriter. Aside from his solo career, Martians is a founding member of the hip hop music collective Odd Future and the alternative R&B band The Internet, and is one half of the production duo The Jet Age of Tomorrow (formerly The Super 3) with Pyramid Vritra, a sub-group of Odd Future.

Early life

Matthew Robert Martin was born on September 12, 1988, in Atlanta, Georgia. His mom was a lead singer in a choir when she was younger, his brother Mitch was a A&R for Outkast and their record label Purple Ribbon Records, and Janelle Monáe. Because of his brother working at the record label, he said also said it had a big influence on him, due to his brother bringing all "kinds of shit", in which he was talking about how his brother would usually come home with new music from the label before it was released. He also said that A Tribe Called Quest, N.E.R.D., and The Commodores was half of the reason he started making music.

Musical career

2007-2009: Beginnings, Super 3, and Odd Future

He started making music in his sophomore year of college when he was 18. He saved up $2,000 and bought music equipment and a new MacBook. He was making music with his "old" and "slow" PC. He published his Beats on Myspace, under the name "The Super 3", with imaginary characters Betty Vasolean and Yoshi Jankins. Jr., inspired by Gorillaz.

Martians was eventually discovered by Odd Future members Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy Beats, in which they liked the beats, but also thought that the beats were "weird". But he eventually got invited to join the group, and then somewhere around 2008, rapper Pyramid Vritra, which was in the group NRK, reached out to Martians to help mix and master the group's tape, "The Goodwill Tape". Martians eventually invited Vritra to come and join the group in Los Angeles, and Vritra and Martians eventually on Odd Future's debut mixtape ''The Odd Future Tape'', in which they worked on the songs "Laxin", "Bubble Gum", "Money Talk", and "Our Story". Vritra eventually released Goodwill Tape the year later.

In 2009, with short-term member BrandUn DeShay, Martians began work on the duo's EP "The Super D3Shay". The EP released on April 29, 2009, with vocals and production from the both of them and no features or guest production at all.

2010 - 2013: Jet Age Of Tomorrow and The Internet

In 2010, after The Super D3Shay, they changed their name to "The Jet Age of Tomorrow", and released projects through 2010. The song "The Knight Hawk" from their album "''Voyager''", was sampled on Kendrick Lamar's song " A.D.H.D". In 2017, Martians accused Sounwave (the producer of ADHD) of non-payment of the sample. Around 2009 or 2010, Martians and Vritra got evicted from their apartment in Georgia, obliging Vritra to stay in Georgia for a year, disconnecting himself from Odd Future and The Jet Age. However, he was able to reconnect with the group, and stay in the collective.

Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians made the group The Internet, and released the album, Purple Naked Ladies, in December 20, 2011. It was also the first album on the (at the time) newly founded Odd Future Records label.

A year later, The duo wrote and produced "Ya Know", which also featured The Internet. The song was featured Odd Future's first studio album, The OF Tape Vol. 2. The duo got back together to make another album named "The Jellyfish Mentality". Four days after the album released, a "bonus EP" was released with 4 new tracks. That same year, The Internet released another album Feel Good, in September 24, 2013.

2014 - Present: Jet Age inactivity, Ego Death, Solo career

2 years later, The Internet released the album Ego Death, which featured artists such as Tyler, The Creator, and Kaytranada. The album was also nominated for a Grammy in 2016. Following the album, Syd and Martians announced they'll be new solo albums from the members of the band before a new Internet album would release. Martians would also co-produce the outro track "Failsafe" to Jet Age collaborator Pyramid Vritra's EP "IM2S+MW" as the Jet Age Of Tomorrow. This marked the first collaboration between the two since Vritra signed to Stones Throw Records.

After 4 years of inactivity (possibly due to working with his band, The Internet), Martians released The Drum Chord Theory in 2017, which featured production by himself, Tyler, the Creator, Syd, Steve Lacy, and KiNTaRO. Martians and Vritra released another Jet Age album in the same year named "God's Poop or Clouds?". It was Jet Age's final piece of music in 4 years, in which Martians said in an interview with The Fader, he said that he doesn't think there will be another Jet Age album, and said that his solo albums are "an extension of it."

A year later, a new Internet album released, named Hive Mind, in July 20, 2018. A year later, Martians released The Last Party, which featured artists such as, fellow Internet member Steve Lacy, and Baby Rose. 2 years later, in 2021, he released two new albums, "Going Normal" on April 9, a bonus EP with 4 new songs on July 2, and "Butterfly Don't Visit Caterpillar" on December 1st, which was his first solo effort with no features or co-production. Martians would take 3 years of music and would occasionally do features, such as on Mia Gladstone's "EMPATHY" and Steve Lacy's 2Gether off his album Gemini Rights. On March 16 of 2023, Martians returned to solo music with the single "Waiting For". In December of that year, Martians teased his 5th studio album "Matt's Missing" with a single "New Matt Album Jan. 12", however he accidentally released the album the same day and took it down some time later. The album officially released January 11, 2024 with slight differences.
