He started two games and made 17 substitute appearances for the "Seasiders" in the 2015–16 season, without scoring a goal, as the club were relegated into League Two. Burton Albion

On 11 January 2024, Paterson was appointed head coach of Burton Albion, who were 17th in League One. Owner Ben Robinson revealed in March that it was only a short-term contract but said that it was "a scenario where hopefully it's going to be a long-term relationship". Paterson left the club after Burton narrowly avoided relegation at the end of the 2023–24 season.
