Malinformation is information that is based on reality but it is used to inflict harm on a person, organisation or country. Examples of malinformation include phishing, catfishing, doxing, swatting and revenge porn. Malinformation is also used to refer to "information that stems from the truth but is often exaggerated in a way that misleads and causes potential harm." Malinformation usually entails a change of context, such as time, space, or privacy. The term was coined by media researcher Hossein Derakhshan in a
