Etymology
Mahoning is from the Lenape language and most likely derived from menehoking, (often written menehokink) meaning a place to get water. Tons of placenames similar to Mahoning, or Mahoning exactly, exist between the east coast and Ohio. It's possibly whites were also confusing this word with mehemening, meaning a beverage of any kind, and the Irish surname Mahoney.
