The name is said to mean "Lubba's Thorpe", i.e. a small settlement belonging to Lubba, an Old Danish name.W. G. Hoskins (1935) Leicestershire Archaeological Society vol XVIII part 2 page 143 "The Anglian and Scandinavian Settlement of Leicestershire" It has been spelled as Lubbesthorpe.
