Overview

The Nepalese film industry is relatively young. Many early films were produced by the Royal Nepal Film Corporation ( 1971) for the government, which was more concerned with the country's cultural heritage than commercial success. They gradually built a film industry infrastructure and enabled private productions. '' Kusume Rumal'' (1985) held the record of highest-grossing film at the box-office until this was surpassed in 2001 by the musical '' Darpan Chhaya'' (these films would contend for the current box office record if figures were adjusted for inflation). New records were set in 2012 with the critically acclaimed crime thriller '' Loot'' which is considered Nepal's biggest blockbuster for exceeding रु 5 crore in Nepal . These records were broken by action-thriller '' Kohinoor'' (2014), which is considered Nepal's first blockbuster for exceeding रु 10 crore in Nepal, and domestically outperforming Indian films. '' Purna Bahadur Ko Sarangi'' set new benchmarks in 2024 with an unprecedented business at the Nepal box office history, smashing रु40 crore milestone, becoming the first and only film to do so and embarking a new era in Nepali Cinema.
