The leader was Laykold. The Laykold name came from the "cold pour asphalt process", lay- cold. Over time, Laykold became one of the major brands that led in synthetic acrylic resin paints that changed the 'face' of tennis in the 60s. The sand was later introduced to control the ball's speed and reduce sliding. Since 1970 over 100,000 Laykold courts have been installed worldwide, including on the South Lawn of the White House, where First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy first established a Laykold court. The court is still Laykold today. Tennis legends Don Budge and Fred Perry played on Laykold at Berkeley University in 1939, the 35th match tour of the USA and Canada, with Budge dominating, winning 28 of the games. During the tennis boom of the 1960s and 1970s, Laykold became established as one of the few materials suitable for hard court surfaces.
