Acne: A Memoir
'. New York: Hachette Books. . "I was born on March 24, 1986. Although my father is Black and my mother has very dark hair and eyes, I was born with fair skin, a pile of bright blonde curls, and blue eyes. I look nothing like either of my parents or my brother. ..At the time of the first dermal eruption, my mom sat my older brother and me down to tell us 'wonderful, exciting news!' We were relocating to Clearwater, Florida. ..We were currently living in La Crescenta, California, a small suburb north of Los Angeles. ..My best friend, Samantha, lived four blocks away. ..Within those four blocks, our whole lives were contained. Within those four blocks, all of our stories occurred. Our childhood was simple and small just like our quiet suburb and I always believed it would stay that way."
