Tharavads and the Matriarchal System

Several tharavads within Thekkepuram boast a rich history, spanning centuries, and are designed with approximately 40 bedrooms to accommodate the extended family members who prefer residing together. The values and traditions of the joint family system continue to thrive within the tharavads of Thekkepuram. These families adhere to the matriarchal system, wherein the lineage is traced through the daughters. The tharavads in this region serve as exemplary instances of Kerala architecture, featuring characteristic elements such as slanting tiled roofs, inner courtyards, wooden folding windows, benches, and wells.
