History
The town was named for the
Kiowa
Kiowa ( ) or Cáuigú () people are a Native Americans in the United States, Native American tribe and an Indigenous people of the Great Plains of the United States. They migrated southward from western Montana into the Rocky Mountains in Colora ...
people. Settled in 1859, it was originally named "Wendling" after an early settler.
It was called "Middle Kiowa" from the 1860s until 1912,
when it was incorporated and the word "Middle" was dropped.
It became the county seat of Elbert County in 1874.
Kiowa suffered from major flooding in 1935.
