History

Starting in 1960, Kelmentsi was designated an
urban-type settlement Urban-type settlement, abbreviated: ; , abbreviated: ; ; ; ; . is an official designation for lesser urbanized settlements, used in several Central and Eastern Europe, Central and Eastern European countries. The term was primarily used in the So ...
. Until 18 July 2020, Kelmentsi served as an administrative center of Kelmentsi Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Chernivtsi Oblast to three. The area of Kelmentsi Raion was merged into Dnistrovskyi Raion. On 26 January 2024, a new law entered into force which abolished the status of urban-type settlement, and Kelmentsi became a rural settlement.
