The station came on air as KTRS in 1981. It was the first new station in Casper in 15 years. At the time, there were only four stations available in the city. KTWO, KKTL,

, and KAWY. KTRS was a played rock music from 1981 to 1997 before moving to 104.7 FM. In the mid-1990s, its slogan was "95-5 KTRS". On 104.7, KTRS changed formats to
