Early life and education

Gutman is one of three children, and grew up in Sydney. Gutman studied undergraduate painting at the

, where she developed an interest in figurative painting. She then received her MFA from the

where she studied sculpture. It was several years after graduating from RISD, and after the loss of a close friend, she put these elements of her practice together to develop her signature approach to textile figuration.
