Johan Ekman was the son of Olof Ekman and Maria, born Johansdotter. He was a student of theology at the

receiving his

in 1870 and was ordained into the priesthood in 1873. He was earned his Bachelor of Theology (''teol. kand.'') in 1876. He became a professor of theology at Uppsala University in 1887 and received his Doctor of Theology (''dr. theol.'') in 1893. Thereafter he worked as a vicar and held other church offices. He was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Västerås in 1898; and appointed
