Braude, an only child, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1949 and raised in the Center City area. He graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia in 1966. He went to the

He began his legal career as a legal services lawyer in the

He was the founder and first president of the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW), a UAW affiliated union which represented staff in civil legal offices for the poor in various states.
