Early life and education
Born near Manningham, Alabama, to Reuben Stallings and Lucinda Ferguson. Stallings completed preparatory studies and was graduated from the
University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1877.
He studied law at that university. Through his father he was descended from
Jacob Astley, 1st Baron Astley of Reading and
Edward Ford.

He married Ella McAllister in 1883, who later died in 1885. He then married Belle McAllister in 1887. In 1909, Stallings married Marie Hudmon.
Death and burial
Stallings died in Birmingham. He was interred in Elmwood Cemetery.[
