Cole is an expert on race and ethnicity in Europe, a subject on which he has authored numerous books and articles. He has co-edited two special issues of the '' Journal of Modern Italian Studies'', and was the editor of Ethnic Groups of Europe (2011), a one-volume encyclopedia. In the latter work, Cole supervised the work of more than 80 scholars from throughout the world. Cole is a fellow of the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment (GNCE). He is the recipient of grants and awards from the
